Question

During the colonial era, several European trading companies ---- fortified outposts along the West African coast to protect their commercial interests.

Accepted Answer

set up — 'Set up' (kurmak) bir yapının inşa edilip kurulduğunu belirtir ve 'fortified outposts' ile doğru eşleşir. 'Put aside' ve 'kept off' bir inşa eylemini karşılamaz; 'turned down' (reddetmek) anlamca tamamen uygunsuzdur.
