The Asian long-horned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, is typically found across East Asia, but it was discovered in the United States in 1996, likely after arriving inside wooden packing crates. The United States became one of the first countries (1)---- this destructive beetle species outside its native range. A rapid eradication plan was quickly (2)---- by government agencies to protect hardwood forests from being destroyed by the invaders. The beetle begins life as a larva that mainly feeds inside maple, birch, and elm trees; (3)----, it also threatens numerous other native hardwood species, several of which are ecologically significant. Forestry officials have reported that the larvae feed (4)---- a wide range of host trees and can severely weaken or kill a tree before moving on to another. Over the following two decades, authorities carried out extensive surveys of affected properties (5)---- containing the invasive beetle.
