There are more than 7,000 spoken languages across the world today, yet fewer than 200 nation-states. Many current national borders were drawn during periods of colonisation or postwar treaty negotiations. As a result, speakers of a single language or dialect are often split across two or more countries. The Kurdish-speaking population, for example, is divided among Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Building a unified national identity across such divisions has often proven difficult.
