Scientists still cannot explain the mechanism ____ the birds maintain such a precise heading over open ocean.

Question

Scientists still cannot explain the mechanism ---- the birds maintain such a precise heading over open ocean.

Accepted Answer

by which — 'The birds maintain a heading by this mechanism' anlamı vardır; araç bildiren edat ilgi zamirinin önüne gelerek 'by which' yapısını kurar. Edat + 'that' birleşimi ('by that') İngilizcede kullanılmaz. Tek başına 'which' ise araç anlamını veremez ve cümleyi eksik bırakır.
